What is the best all round lens for the canon rebel xt?

i have had my rebel xt for a year and a half now and i have the lens it came with but it just isnt enough.i need something i can take great portrait pictures as well as zoom in on landscape shots too?with the cost of these lenses being so high i really need advice as how to get the most lens for my money.
